About Tales from the Crypt (1989-1996)
Tales from the Crypt (1989-1996) brought the infamous EC Comics horror anthology to HBO with a format that attracted Hollywood's biggest directors and starsāepisodes were helmed by Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner, Walter Hill, and Tom Hanks, while actors like Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, and Tim Roth lined up for roles. The Crypt Keeper puppet, voiced by John Kassir and operated by Kevin Yagher's team, required four puppeteers to bring to life and became one of the most recognizable horror hosts since Elvira, with his cackling puns and decomposing face. Each episode adapted or was inspired by the original 1950s EC Comics that had been banned by the Comics Code Authority in 1954, and the show's gleeful violence and dark humor proved that censors had been wrong to suppress the material for decades. Running for seven seasons with 93 episodes, the show spawned films, a cartoon series, and proved that premium cable could push boundaries that network television never would.
