About Freaked (1993)

Tom Stern and Alex Winter's Freaked (1993) is one of the most unhinged studio comedies ever produced, a surrealist body horror comedy about a celebrity who gets transformed into a mutant freak by a mad scientist at a South American sideshow. Alex Winter, fresh off Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, co-wrote and co-directed the film which features Mr. T as a bearded lady, Brooke Shields as a talk show host, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves as the villainous dog boy Ortiz. The practical creature effects by Screaming Mad George and Tony Gardner rival anything in mainstream horror, transforming actors into grotesque but hilarious monsters through elaborate prosthetics. Fox buried the film with almost no theatrical release, but it became a VHS cult classic celebrated for its anarchic energy and the kind of unrestrained creative insanity that studios rarely allow.
