About The Burning (1981)

Tony Maylam's The Burning (1981) is a summer camp slasher featuring some of Tom Savini's most ambitious practical effects work, including the legendary raft massacre—a single sequence where the deformed caretaker Cropsy attacks five teenagers in rapid succession with garden shears. The film was produced by Harvey and Bob Weinstein as one of their earliest projects at Miramax, and features early screen appearances from Jason Alexander, Fisher Stevens, and Holly Hunter before they became stars. Based on the Cropsy urban legend that had terrified real campers in upstate New York for generations, the film was shot at an actual summer camp in North Tonawanda, New York, lending authenticity to its woodsy setting. The MPAA forced significant cuts to Savini's effects, but the uncut version—restored for home video releases—reveals some of the most technically accomplished gore work in the slasher genre.
