  • About The Toxic Avenger (1984)

Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman's The Toxic Avenger (1984) became the flagship film of Troma Entertainment, transforming a ninety-pound weakling named Melvin into a hideously deformed superhero of superhuman size and strength after he falls into a barrel of toxic waste. The film was initially a box office failure, but midnight screenings at the Bleecker Street Cinema in New York City ran for nearly a year, building the grassroots following that made Toxie a cult icon. Kaufman's deliberately transgressive approach—combining slapstick comedy with extreme gore and social satire—created a unique tone that spawned sequels, an animated children's show (Toxic Crusaders), and a 2023 reboot starring Peter Dinklage. Based in Troma's ramshackle New Jersey studios, The Toxic Avenger embodies the DIY punk ethos of independent filmmaking and proved that a film could succeed entirely outside the Hollywood system through sheer force of personality and an unwavering commitment to being as outrageous as possible.
